Spring Baseball Evaluations and Team Assignments

All players registered for the Minors division or higher must attend evaluations to ensure proper placement. Players should try out for the highest division that matches their age and self-assessed skill level. Evaluations assist us in placing players in the appropriate divisions and making balanced teams. No players will be cut, and all players will have a team to play on.

  • Juniors (60/90) and Intermediate (50/70 divisions will have a formal tryout for the Juniors team(s). Any player not getting assigned to the Juniors team(s) will be assigned to the Intermediate team(s).
  • Majors and Minors divisions are assigned through evaluations and a formal draft process, led by the league's Player Agent.
  • Lower divisions are assigned randomly to ensure balanced teams.
Note: All 12-year-olds will automatically be assigned into the Majors division but must still attend evaluations to ensure the best draft decisions. All LL 13+ year-old players not drafted to a Junior team will automatically be entered into the Intermediate division draft.

Evaluation Dates and Location

Players may attend two evaluation dates but are only required to attend one. Registered players must sign up for the date(s) they plan to attend here.

If a registered player is unable to attend  an evaluation, please email VP of Baseball, Trish Fields at [email protected] to discuss accommodations.

Evaluations will be held indoors at Energy Athletics / Brand New Ballgame, located at 25 Cushing Drive in Wrentham, MA.

What skills will be assessed?

  • Batting
  • Fielding Ground Balls (grounders)
  • Fielding Fly Balls (pop-ups in the outfield)
  • Throwing / Pitching / Catching
  • Running

How can I prepare my player for evaluations?

  • Practice with them beforehand, if possible. We know how hard that can be during the winter in New England. A quick trip to the batting cages before evaluations can make all of the difference in the world!
  • Encourage them - Assure them that they will be on a team, regardless of their performance at evaluations. Encourage them to have fun and pay attention to coaches so they know what's expected in each drill.
  • Set expectations - Although evaluations will last 60-90 minutes, and there will be ample time to warm up, each child will only be evaluated on a limited number of reps for each activity. Let them know what activities to expect (see above).

What should my child bring?

  • Glove
  • Bat
  • Batting Helmet
  • Batting Gloves (if desired)
  • Water
  • Catchers bring catching equipment (Please email [email protected] if you need to use the league's catcher's equipment.)
We will have equipment on site if needed. All gear should be labeled with the player's name.

What should my child wear?

Players should wear comfortable athletic clothes, a hat and sneakers (cleats are not allowed indoors). Baseball/softball pants are okay but not required.

What is the evaluation process?

  • Check-In: Your child will receive a sticker that has their evaluation number. The sticker will be attached to the back of their shirt so they're identifiable to the coaches and league administrators.
  • Wait: Players may/will wait for the previous group to finish.
  • Warm Up: Players will be called in to start warming up and playing catch with their peers as they wait for evaluations to begin.
  • Evaluation: Drills will be facilitated by Assistant Coaches. Our league Vice President, Player Agent, and Team Managers, along with two independent professional evaluators from Energy Athletics / Brand New Ballgame will observe and evaluate players based on the activities (batting, ground balls, fly balls, throwing, pitching, catching and running).

Parents/Guardians are asked to NOT participate in any part of evaluations, including warmups. For safety reasons, parents will not be allowed in the evaluation area and will be asked to remain in the parent lounge or to return at the scheduled end of their player's evaluation.

When will teams be announced?

Team assignments will be announced in mid-March following evaluations and player drafts.
