Calling All Aspiring Umpires – Junior Umpire Class Now Open for Enrollment!

SYBSA is excited to announce this year's umpire training class designed primarily for 7th graders—with room for interested 8th and 9th graders, and even 6th graders eager to learn the ropes. While our main focus is on 7th grade students (to align with our game scheduling and travel needs), we also welcome 6th graders who show enthusiasm for the sport. (Please note that if you’re in 6th grade, you won’t be eligible to umpire Majors games.)

Dates of the Program:

The program will be held primarily at Sharon High School, with two outdoor classes.

  • Indoor Sessions:
    • When: Tuesday nights, 6:30–8:00 PM
    • Dates:
      • March 11
      • March 18
      • March 25
      • April 1
    • Where: High School (free room provided; please check with the main office for room confirmation)
  • Outdoor Sessions:
    • Choose One:
      • Sunday, March 30 or Sunday, April 6 (time TBD)
    • Where: Deborah Sampson Field

Each indoor session lasts 1.5 hours—providing a blend of instruction, practice, and interactive learning. Our outdoor sessions offer a couple of hours on the field, ensuring aspiring umpires get practical, hands-on experience in real game situations. (Note: In the event of inclement weather, sessions may be rescheduled or held indoors.)

Course Highlights

  • Umpire Fundamentals: Learn the official rules (access the rulebook via the Little League app) and gain the skills needed to manage a game confidently.
  • Real-World Interaction: Prepare to work with coaches and players effectively—an essential skill, especially since game-day interactions can be intense.
  • Final Assessment: A 1.5-hour final exam (potentially as a take-home assignment) will test your knowledge and skills. Instructor Moore will send out the exam details.
  • Uniform Requirement: All participants must purchase an umpire shirt and hat for $25. This small investment helps you feel part of the team and look the part on the field.
