Girls, Sharon Shine in Summer Showdown II
This past weekend we hosted the Sharon Summer Showdown, the U14 Softball Tournament, at Ames Street Fields. We had 14 teams participate, coming from as far as Manchester NH to Central Mass to Providence RI. We battled a few rain delays but managed to play 34 games over 3 days. The weekend culminated in the championship game Sunday afternoon between the Dartmouth Destroyers and Taunton Tornadoes. It was a very tight game ending in a 3-2 win for Taunton. It was an exciting and exhausting weekend of excellent softball! Thank you to all the teams who participated, including our own Sharon U14 team. A special thanks to Jim Mckee, Howie Rubenstein and Matt Libby for waking at 5AM on Sunday morning to dry and prepare the 4 fields for an 8AM game time. You all are the best! Thank you also to Cheryl Whiting and Jean Cho for stocking the snack shack and keeping it running from sun-up to sun-down. All proceeds from this tournament will be used to support SYBSA and the Girls Softball Program.

NL Playoffs: Astros Win
The Astros, rising from the losing bracket after a quick loss in the double-elimination tournament, beat the Pirates twice to win the 2008 National League Sharon Baseball Rec Championship. Congratulations.

 |
Who? Who? Yup, Owls Win
In the Championship Series for the 6-9th grade girls rec softball, the Owls defeated the Thunder two games to one, to claim the 2008 Sharon Softball banner. The theme this season was rain, rain, rain. It wouldn't go away! Game 1 of the Championship series looked like the Thunder was going all the way with an overpowering 8-6 win. Game 2 started with a big thunderstorm that ended just before game time. The Owls pulled ahead early, winning the second game, 13-5, to even the series at 1-1. Game 3 started with bright, sunny skies. The Owls were ahead in the early innings, and then it started to rain again. The Thunder donned their rally visors and got four runs in the rain. It finally stopped raining, leaving a sloppy, soggy field for the final innings of the game. In the end, a lot of rain, mud ... and a great effort from both teams despite the two days of messy fields. Who hoo who won? Well, with the rain, the Thunder was gone and The Owls won 17-11. Congrats to both teams for giving us an exciting series to end the 2008 softball season.
|
 |
AL Playoffs: Twins Win
The Twins won the American League Championship after defeating the White Sox, 8-2 at the Deb. By coincidence, coaching or the patriotic hues of their uniform, the Twins also won the American League Championship last season. Congratulations.

Barnstormer Roster Updates (8-10 years)

Playoffs: It's Thunder vs Owls for the Championship
In the second round of the Sharon Spring Softball playoffs from 6/12, the Thunder defeated the Bobcats in what no doubt was an exciting game at Ames fields. Points were probably scored, the crowd probably cheered and there were, one might assume, lots of hits and several sparkling defensive plays. No matter. The facts are these: the Thunder won, so it will be Thunder vs. Owls at Ames in the Championship Series beginning Monday June 16 at 6pm at Ames. Best two out of three, Monday and Tuesday night, and Wednesday if necessary. Best of luck, girls!

American and National League Playoffs On-Going
Teams are winning, teams are losing. We see kids running around down at the Deb, but nothing's getting reported (if a tree falls in the forest and there's no one there to hear it...) Results and standings are probably here, but we really don't know for sure.

Playoffs: First Round
In the first round of the Sharon Spring Softball playoffs from 6/10, the Owls defeated the Sooners and the Bobcats defeated Rams (we'll assume the teams scored runs, but if they're not reported to us, we can't report the details to you). The Owls move on to the Championship Series. The Bobcats play the Thunder June 12th. Winner of this game play the Owls in a 2 out of 3 series beginning June 16th.

RESCHEDULED: Baseball Field Day; Enter Derby to Win Sox Tickets
Note: This event has been moved from Saturday to Sunday because of the expected rain. It's a family fun day at Sharon's Deborah Samson Park this Sunday, June 1st, as the annual Baseball Field Day returns, sponsored by the good folks at SYBSA. Little League games and two old favorites, the moonwalk and dunk tank, will be on display from 10:00am-3:30pm. Plus, the 2nd annual coaches' Home Run Derby fundraiser will take place from 10:30am-1:00pm on Field A. In this contest, each participant competes in a spirited slugfest where metal and muscle combine for 15 swings to knock baseballs into the field and out of the park (a sobering 200 feet or so) for points. The entrant with the most points receives an engraved trophy. All entrants are entered to win a pair of first base, box seat tickets to the 8/3 Sox game against the Oakland A's. All area residents 18 or older are eligible to participate (not just coaches). Entry fee is $50. No reservations are necessary, but get there early (for more info, contact Paul Izzo at 781-784-3215). And as always, there will be plenty of food and drink at the Snack Shack. Fun for the whole family!

May 23 is Deborah Samson Day in Massachusetts
Before you take the field, take a moment to reflect on the accomplishments of Deborah Samson, the "Commonwealth's official state heroine." As most of you know, Ms. Samson (not "Sampson," as it turns out) joined the 4th Mass. Regiment as "Robert Shurtliff" and fought in the Revolution for 17 months. She was wounded twice before being honorably discharged in 1783 once her gender was discovered. She married Benjamin Gannett and retired to Sharon, raising 3 children. Paul Revere of Canton, petitioned for veteran's benefits for the impoverished war hero. She died on April 19, 1827. Out of respect for her legacy, mentions of the park will be spelled Deborah Samson Park on this site. Read the excellent article on her from today's Globe.

Attention Summer Baseball Players
Tryouts are this Sunday, May 18th and Sharon Travel Summer Baseball will have a few options this year. We are offering 3 levels of play, they are all travel teams, and we are guaranteeing that there will be a place for everyone that wants to play. At each grade level there will be a Hock team (most competitive) which will have approximately 12 players on it, then there will be a District 8 (second level) team which will have approximately 13 players on it. We then have the Barnstormer league which is a no-cut league and will have room for every child that either doesn’t make the first 2 teams or doesn’t even want to try out for the more competitive teams. The age requirements are you must be 8 yrs old on or before May 1st, 2008 and no older than 12 on May 1st, 2008 (Or played on the 60’ diamond this spring). If you are not interested in trying out at all and want to be placed directly into the barnstormer league, you can register today by emailing Cary Nevins at: barnstormerleague@yahoo.com and you must include the following information:
Child’s Name:
Age on May 1st, 2008:
Birth date:
Phone Number:
Email Address:
Please include all information to be registered in this league.
IMPORTANT NOTE: When the rosters are posted on the website next week, your child’s name will only appear if he made one of the 2 competitive teams or you have already registered for the Barnstormer league. For those kids that do try out for the more competitive teams but do not make the team, your name will not appear online but you can still play in the Barnstormer league. Once the Hock and District 8 rosters are posted online and you see your son did not make it, please email me immediately with the information above to guarantee a spot. No child will be turned away but if you do not register by May 31st, you may not be able to play (the league has a deadline to turn in rosters). Finally, if you are interested in coaching in the Barnstormer league, please send me that information as well, thanks!

9 Year-Old and Friendship League Summer Baseball Tryout Info
Tryouts for 9 Year Old Summer Baseball will be Sunday, May 18, at the Deb. Fields A, B and C only. The first tryout is for the competitive 9 Year-Old Hockomock Travel Team from 9:00am to 10:00am. Kids that are age eligible for the Hockomock Team must have their birthday between May 1, 1998 through April 30, 1999. Tom Riley and Rich Stamm will coordinate... Tryouts for the Friendship League are also Sunday, May 18, at the Deb, from 3:30 to 4:30 pm. Dan Tarlin will coordinate. Players are eligible for the Friendship League Teams if their birthdays are between May 1, 1999 and April 30, 2000. This also is competitive baseball, but at the lower age bracket. Playing up is not an option... Players should bring their equipment and a water bottle to these tryouts. Please know your child’s vacation schedule as it will be taken into account when picking the Travel Teams. Selections will be based on spring coach’s evaluations, commitment and the tryouts. Players not selected for the travel teams can play in the less-competitive, in-town Barnstormer League. The names of all players not selected will be passed onto Cary Nevins, the Barnstormer coordinator for team assignment. If anyone is interested in playing but has an absolute conflict with the tryout dates, selections will be made based on the spring coaches evaluations. We do need to know beforehand if any such conflicts exists and that the player is interested in playing summer ball.

The Season will begin with our one-day “Spring Training” Saturday, April 5th, from 8:30 -10:30 am (and Sunday, April 6, for our Sunday players at 2pm). All kids are invited to the fields with their gloves to loosen up, take some grounders, shag some flies, take a few cuts, have some fun and get baseball back into their systems. Teams will be announced the week of 4/7 and practices will begin on Saturday, April 12th (and Sunday the 13th for Shabbat players). Each team will play/practice once during the week and once on the weekend. Actual days will rotate. The season will start with about 3 weeks of practices followed by a schedule of games and practices for the duration of the season. We have real games this year, with umps so the kids really start to feel what it is all about. With this added enjoyment comes added responsibility. Third grade parents will be asked to help out at the Snack Shack. From time to time and we hope that many of you will happily "volunteer" when asked. Once we split up into teams our times are:
Saturdays: 8:30-10:30 (generally)

Parents Cheer. Coaches Coach. Players Play.
It's been a great season so far. All the kids have been having fun and playing hard. Just remember the Code, folks. The SYBSA Code of Conduct that is. They're spelled out here, but it all boils down to this: parents cheer, coaches coach, and players play. If you have a problem with a coach or disagree with an ump's call, keep it to yourself (and away from the kids). Sleep on it, or just wait for a more appropriate time to voice your opinion. Trust the coach. Respect the ump. Love your kids.
